Welcome to the Aarhus Net Japan

"Environmental issues are best handled with the participation of all concerned citizens, at the relevant level."(Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development)

"The NGO Network for Realization of the Aarhus Convention in Japan" (Aarhus Net Japan or ANJ, Chief Director: Yuko Nakashita) is a network of citizens, members of non-governmental organizations or non-profit organizations, lawyers, and academics in Japan supporting themes and guidelines of the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Maters (Aarhus Convention).

The Aarhus Convention is the rule for environmental democracy, adopted at the Forth Minstrel Conference "Environment for Europe" in Aarhus, Denmark, on 25 June 1998. It regards environmental rights as human right and requires public authorities to make sure three rights for the public: access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters.

The Aarhus Net Japan is convinced that those environmental rights are basic requirements for the public to promote sustainable and environmental development as the Rio Declaration stated in the principle 10.
